O festival recebe o nome do pavio (avali) das lâmpadas de barro (deepa) que os indianos iluminam fora de suas casas para simbolizar a luz interior que protege das trevas espirituais. Este festival é tão importante para os hindus como o Natal é para os cristãos. Ao longo dos séculos, o Diwali tornou-se um festival nacional que é apreciado pela maioria dos indianos independentemente da sua fé.

This festival is as important to the Hindus as Christmas is to Christians. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of their faith.
